Travel Story by Alistair Wright & Christine Pritchard

  A postcard to Riga
Riga, Latvia

Old Riga

We spent 3 nights at Riga in February 2007 and based ourselves at the Albert Hotel in the Art Nouveau District which was recommended to us by our friends Christof and Michelle. The places of interest were easily reached by foot within 20 minutes of our hotel. The hotel provided wonderful and plentiful breakfasts. The heated floors and mirrors in the bathroom were a nice touch.

Best places to visit in Riga:

Old Riga: Stroll through the meandering cobblestone streets where you will see the Swedish Gate, the Dome Cathedral and the House of Blackheads. Take the lift up to the observatory deck of St. Peterís Church for excellent views of the capital. In the winter, have a go on the outdoor ice rink. Old Riga is the focus of any visit to Riga.

City Centre: Walk alongside the Riga Canal where you will see the Freedom Monument which is the symbol of the Latvian nation and the Opera House. Stop by for a drink of tea at the Apsara Tea House and sit on huge Oriental-style pillows in a tiny wooden house.

Central Market: It is an excellent visit as gives an insight of the real Riga. Located near the railway station, each of its 4 buildings sells fish (they do sell them alive!), dairy, fruit and vegetables, and meat on its own. It has been unchanged since the 1930s. You may get lost!

Hotel Latvija: Take a ride to the Skyline Bar on the 26th floor using the glass lift and it provides wonderful views over Riga with a cocktail in your hands. The cocktails only cost around £2/£3.

Shopping in Riga was nothing to write home about and it is not a particularly commercial capital. There are many places where you can drink and eat which was a major highlight. The meals never cost more than a fiver and half a litre of beer was around a quid. Itís a very cheap place for a capital and your wallet will not feel light at the end of the evening or even the holiday.
